now, in virginia beach, virginia they're watching and waiting for earl. but first, checking in live from the fox news extreme weather center. what can you tell us about where this storm is now? >> this advisory just came in minutes ago. still 150 miles now south-southeast here of cape hat tras. weakened a little bit now to 105 miles per hour, sustained down from 140 miles per hour where we were today. and it continues to make a little bit more of an easterly jog here that. is certainly good news for folks across the outer banks. however, some of the rain is moving on shore now. there are winds around 50-60 miles per hour. and as this band right here, is the last image right there. that is where struggle was winds are. we're likely up to 80 or 90 mimp going to get closer so i think around 2:00, 3:00 in the morning we're going to potentially see the worst of this. hurricane warnings in effect across outer banks. and then, we still have a hurricane warning in affect across areas of massachusetts. why in just a moment. we're going deal with three to five inches of rain not as bad across

. and hurricane watches from virginia to delaware. correspondent jonathan serrie is live in hill devil hills, north carolina, with an update. >> reporter: you can see the red flags that the lifeguards have been installing on the beach. it's been a beautiful sunny day here, they are worried about the heavier than usual surf in the atlantic and potentially riptides. earlier today, the lifeguards had to go out and rescue a surfer who could not bat the rip tides. they got him to shore safely. as you look at some of the cottages along the beaches, not seeing any of the boarding up that you normally would, if they were anticipating a direct hit from the hurricane. as you look at the path of the hurricane, the forecasters believe the eye of the storm will stay out to sea. nevertheless, the category four hurricane is a particularly strong storm. and so they are anticipating at least tropical storm force winds where i'm standing right now. potentially hurricane force winds. so many residents and visitors not wanting to take any chances. those who are not leaving the islands are stocking up on food, w

warnings for all of eastern north carolina and tropical storm warnings from virginia to long island. later today, hurricane warnings will sh issued for cape cod. a look at a powerful storm. you can clearly see the eye of the storm and weaken from here on out but it's already too strong so if it weakens from a 4 to a 3 that can still do a lot of destruction on the outer banks. it's traveling 50 to a hundred miles parallel to the east coast. if this had been 50 miles west of this this on would have been one of the historic and damaging hurricanes ever. it's a little off the coast and still do damage. tomorrow morning, during the morning rush hour into the noon hour, the strongest winds will be virginia beach, maryland, delaware coast up through the jersey shore. by friday afternoon the tropical storm force winds are about from new york city all the way out through long island including connecticut, long island and the cape. the hurricane force winds should arrive on cape cod come tomorrow evening by 9:00 or 10:00. they may even do evacuations on the outer cape maybe from orleans to province
